Joint Tenancy Documentation

When One Owner Has Passed Away

Joint tenancy with right of survivorship is a common way for couples, family members, or co-owners to hold investment accounts. When a transaction involves joint tenants (whether one or more are deceased or living) specific documentation and verification are required.

If There Are Living Joint Tenants

If there are additional living joint tenants on the account (for example, a former spouse or co-owner), they must also participate in the transaction.

Requirements if we are processing Medallion Stamps for both parties:

Verification: All living joint tenants must be verified in our system before we can proceed.

Signatures: Each living joint tenant must sign the Medallion form(s) we will be stamping.

Requirements if we are processing a Medallion Stamp for one party:

Verification: The party we are processing the Medallion Stamp for needs to be verified in our system.

If the other joint tenant has already received their stamp, we need a copy of the form with the Medallion Stamp for the other party to process the transaction.

We cannot complete the transaction until all living joint tenants have been verified and all required signatures or copies are received.

When One Owner Has Passed Away

When one joint tenant passes away, the surviving owner(s) automatically inherit the deceased person’s share under the right of survivorship. However, documentation is still required to update account records and complete the Medallion transaction.

Required Documents:

Death certificate: Certified copy showing the co-owner has passed

Account statement: Showing both names on the account (dated within the last 6 months)

Medallion form(s): Completed and signed as required

Identification: Current government-issued photo ID of the surviving joint tenant(s)

If Multiple Joint Tenants Have Passed Away

If more than one joint tenant has passed away at different times:

Provide death certificates for each deceased person

Include dates of death to establish the order of succession

Provide letters testamentary or administration for the most recently deceased (if applicable)

Important Note

We are a document-first service. Our review is based on the documentation you provide.

Please note that we reserve the right to request additional documentation to ensure your transaction can be processed.
